A TARDIS-style toilet in Stourport could disappear from its current location and rematerialise elsewhere in the town.

Moving the superloo from Raven Street to a more central spot near to or on Stourport High Street is among a series of recommendations about public toilet provision and maintenance likely to be considered by Wyre Forest District Council's cabinet.

Members of the council's commercial services policy and scrutiny panel were due to meet last night to discuss the findings of two working groups looking into the issue.

Their recommendations to the cabinet, meeting on April 27, followed a strategic review of the toilets in Kidderminster, Stourport and Bewdley.

One of the working groups concluded more resources should be made available to support the two employees responsible for most of the toilet cleaning, with a £10,000 van purchased and £4,100 budgeted for the cost of running it.

The other group felt the district's toilets were well used and, generally, adequate to meet demand, except for Stourport, where there was a shortage, particularly on Riverside Meadows.

One possible solution was hiring a trailer-type unit throughout the school summer holiday period, at a cost of £4,550. Screening for the trailer, such as plants, would cost an extra £3,000 a year.

A five-year programme of refurbishment of the district's toilets was in its final stages, with just Kidderminster's Rowland Hill Shopping Centre's remaining to be upgraded.

That work, however, was on hold, due to the recent sale of the centre to an American investment house. The council was reluctant to spend the necessary £20,000 if the toilets might be relocated elsewhere in the centre.

A short-term smartening up, costing between £5,000 and £10,000, was more likely.

The groups also suggested spending £500 on a portable door counter, to record numbers of users of toilet blocks, feeling that could aid future reviews.

Overall costs of implementing the series of recommendations would be £55,000 for 2006-07 and £20,550 for the following year.
