AN Evesham man researching for a book he is writing on asparagus is looking for stories from growers and recipes from cooks.

Chris Sheehan, of Fairwater Close, a keen amateur cook himself, developed a particular interest in asparagus after moving to the town a few years ago.

"The traditional gras grown outdoors is one of the few British vegetables left that is truly seasonal," he said. "The Vale is famous for it and I have always enjoyed shopping for it and always pleased to see the first real gras in the shops."

Mr Sheehan said everyone he had spoken to about asparagus so far seemed to have some story to tell and that gave him the idea for the book.

"The growers, the enthusiasts and the area deserve something put together on what after all has helped make the Vale world famous and if it does something for the area then I shall be pleased," Mr Sheehan said.

Mr Sheehan intends to call his book A Passion for Asparagus. He anticipates it being published - he is paying for it himself - in the autumn.
