DESPITE the cold and windy weather throughout March, a number of Worcester's Perdiswell Golf Club members have turned in some creditable performances.

Arthur Pike was a clear winner of the EGU Gold Medal with an excellent net 62, followed by Reg Andrews and Alan Maund on net 65 and 67 respectively.

The March Medal was won by Mike Huggins with a net 63, Nathan Johnstone coming second with a net 65 and Martin Aylieff on net 66. Jane Nicklin won the ladies prize with a net 73.

The first of the Summer League events has taken place and the best stableford score was recorded by Roy Turner with 35 points, closely followed by Cyril Misters with 34.

The Lombard Trophy saw Misters take top spot with a net 65, winning the count-back from Aylieff. Adrian Crowley was third with a net 68.

In the mid-week competitions, Geoff Edge won the nine-hole medal with a net 32, followed by Brian Hodgetts and Huggins on 34 and 36 respectively.

The March mid-week medal was won by Nathan Johnstone with an excellent net 62, Huggins again appearing on the rostrum with net 63 and Graham Potts nextwith a net 66. Brian Cash recorded a hole-in-one on the 15th hole after 40 years of trying.

The mid-week stableford was won by Huggins who continued his good form with 40 points and a significant handicap adjustment. Edge was second with 39 points( handicap also cut by two shots), followed by Jack Ruston with 35 points.

The club's annual meeting was well attended with Ray Day relinquishing his captain's responsibilities after a successful year. He is succeeded by John Fogwill.

Meanwhile, Sapey amateur Joe Morley and his club's PGA professional Chris Knowles are chasing golfing glory in Europe's biggest pro-am competition, the Lombard Trophy.

The pair tee off in the regional final on May 22 at Little Aston Golf Club, with a luxury five-day trip to Portugal up for grabs if they can fend off stiff competition in the better-ball medal play format.

Morley earned the chance to partner Knowles by winning the club qualifying competition with a score of 42 points.

The winners of 16 regional finals will enjoy an expenses-paid trip to compete in the Grand Final held on the Ocean Course, Vale Do Lobo, Portugal from September 6-10.

Morley, is a 64-year-old driver from Stourport. He is married with five children, has been playing golf for 30 years and plays off a handicap of 13.

Knowles, 38, has been a professional at Sapey for 16 years and will win £475 if he is the winning professional in the regional event.
