THE spirit of fundraising is well and truly in the air in Evesham as more than 1,000 women in the town prepare for a challenge that will make a difference to thousands of people in the UK.

The challenge is Race for Life, the charity is Cancer Research UK and on Sunday, June 25, a total of 1,276 women in Evesham of all ages and levels of fitness will descend on Crown Meadow to raise money for the important cause.

The course will see participants run, jog or walk five-kilometres around Crown Meadow and along the banks of the River Avon and this year's Race for Life is the fourth consecutive year that the event has been held in Evesham and backed by the Evesham Journal.

In those four years, a total of £236,260 has been raised in the town alone and this year, organisers are keen to smash the 2006 target of £90,000.

Up to 750,000 women are expected to take part in total, and with 230 events across the UK, the hope is to raise at least £46 million nationally.

Cancer Research UK's Race for Life began with just one race in Battersea Park, which saw more than 600 women raise £36,000 in sponsorship.

Twelve years on, and Race for Life has grown to become the UK's biggest women only fundraising event. So far the event has raised more than £100 million for Cancer Research UK and welcomed more than two million women to the events.

Race organiser for the Evesham area, Rebecca Hillyard, is keen to encourage women all over the area to sign up for the important challenge: "Race for Life is a popular fundraising event and in Evesham there is massive support.

"Every single woman who takes part and raises funds through Race for Life makes an invaluable contribution towards the fight against cancer. It's a hugely enjoyable experience with a fantastic atmosphere."

She added: "Without the help and support of the following people, Race for Life 2006 in Evesham would be impossible. A big thank you must go to the Evesham Journal, Wychavon District Council, Vale Ladies Circle, Evesham Army Cadets and Evesham Rowing Club."

The Evesham race is open to 1,800 people and there are 524 spaces remaining for any women in the area who wish to take part.
