STOURPORT men's and ladies' hockey teams finished their resepctive seasons on a high with victories in their final matches - while their golden oldies have marched through to a national final.

Phil Lashford's lads concluded their National North Division campaign with a 5-1 thumping of Formby to finish in mid-table.

They gained revenge for an away defeat at the hands of the Merseyside team earlier in the season with an impressive performance.

Lashford led the way with a hat-trick, while Imran Yousaf and Marc Edwards also notched with David Seddon collecting a consolation for Formby.

Stourport's display was all the more pleasing given that the players had not had chance for a proper warm-up.

Confusion over the time of the match had seen the umpires get the match under way 45 minutes early.

Skipper Lashford said the main positive to come out of the season of consolidation was the emergence of a string of talented youngsters.

"We can reflect on a season where numerous young players have played National League hockey and have genuinely influenced games.

"This is reflected by the Under-18 team's showing in the final stages of the U18 HA Cup to be played later in the month.

He said Chris Griffiths, Andy Cavendish and Richard Drew had made promising debuts while Edwards and Luke Carless went from strength to strength.

Stourport ladies will also be gunning for more glory next season after finishing their Midland Conference title-winning year with a 2-0 win over Shrewsbury.

Holly Lashford's girls enjoyed most of the possession but found it hard to break down their well-drilled Shropshire hosts.

Player-of-the-match Kayleigh Hateley, playing her last game before leaving the club for university, signed off in style with the first goal.

Sophie Harris secured the points from a second-half short corner to complete a memorable season for the side coached by Mark Moss.

They will be aiming to keep their success story rolling in Midlands Division Two next season.

The ladies seconds lost 2-1 to Old Sils with Wilma Martin on target while the thirds and fourths lost 2-0 against Evesham and Redditch respectively.

The men's veterans made it through to the final of the EH Veterans Cup with a 4-1 victory at Kingston Upon Hull in Sunday's semi-final.

The goals came from Imran Sherwani, David Knott, Andy Watson and Tom White - a group of players dubbed the big four by manager Roy Woster.

The final will be on Sunday May 21, with the opponents and venue still to be decided.

l A brace by Kidderminster Ladies player-of-the season Kay McDonald could not stop them losing a nine-goal thriller at Old Sils.

Despite coming back from two goals down to lead 4-3 with strikes from McDonald (2) and Kate Jones and Giverney Gallagher, Kidderminster could not maintain their momentum.

It was 4-4 at the break, and although Kidderminster defended well, Old Sils stole the points from a short corner in the second-half.

Gallagher was named young player-of-the-season while the ladies were voted the Kidderminster club's team of the year at the awards dinner. They host Stourport at 11.30 am on Saturday.
