WYRE Forest Swimming Club members were at their best at this year's Worcestershire County Championships.

The club's 28 participants achieved an unprecedented 109 personal bests over two events at Wolverhampton and Worcester.

It follows in the footsteps of Wyre Forest's Amy Smith, who made waves with a relay gold at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne last month.

Oche Ignoche, nine, was the star of the show at the county championships, setting two new championship best times in the 50-metre freestyle and 50-metre breaststroke.

Among them 10 girls and 18 boys recorded 26 Midland district qualifying times competing against the best swimmers in the county.

The club's 11-year girls came first, second and third in their 50-metre freestyle heats with Eliza Bradley collecting silver in the final and Jessica Griffiths finishing fourth.

Bradley achieved nine Midland times while Faith Ross gained six and Griffiths recorded four with her time in the 100-metre freestyle just one-second off a national time.

Richard Carter, 18, won his age group round in both the 50-metre and 100-metre fly, finishing fourth and third in the respective finals.

Hannah Wear, 17, was second in her year group and third overall in the final.

In total, Wyre Forest won 11 golds, 15 silvers and 13 bronzes.

Some of the swimmers' performances also brought them recognition in the Cheesestrings Challenge National Age Group Championships.

Bradley won British Age Group Category gold and silver medals, while there were also silvers for Igoche, Ross and Griffiths.

They are now hoping to repeat their success at a regional level with the chance to compete in the national championships in July.
