NEWTOWN Sports Juniors became the Mercian League U13 champions with their 14th victory of the campaign defeating Drakes Broughton.

NEWTOWN SPORTS JUNIORS U13S 3, DRAKES BROUGHTON U13S 1

With a strong wind at their backs Juniors were deep into Broughton territory but failed to exert any concerted pressure on the Broughton goal. With passing and control difficult the match descending into kick and rush with the ball bypassing midfield. One such clearance eluded the Broughton defence and Bannister raced onto the ball and neatly slid the ball home. Juniors won a series of corners and were rewarded when Bannister swooped to stab home his side's second.

The second-half saw Juniors revert to their normal passing and moving game whilst Broughton enjoyed more territorial advantage with balls deep into the Juniors half. With half chances to both sides the next goal was crucial. It went to the Juniors when Bannister's superbly timed run saw Sweetly volley home his and his side's third. Broughton now played four up front in an effort to get back into the game.

The Juniors defence coped well and Freeman made telling blocks to keep his goal intact but he was powerless when the Broughton midfielder let fly with a 30-yard strike that flew into the top corner. A goalmouth melee in the final minute saw Broughton hit the bar twice before Juniors cleared up field as the referee blew for full time leaving Newtown Sports Juniors U13s champions for this season.

The season isn't finished yet and the boys must continue to put in the hard work to maintain the standards they have set.

Man-of-the-match was Matthew Bannister.

LYPPARD RANGERS TIGERS U9S 2, MALVERN TOWN WANDERERS U9S 1

THIS closely contested game ended in defeat for Wanderers, even though they should have at the very least shared the points.

The game began with Max Lobo and Nick Smith putting in solid performances in the Wanderers defence. Some neat football from Tigers ended in the first goal of the game when Cameron Brett slotted home from a cross. Wanderers then went on the attack with good work from Adam Page and Aaron Boden being halted by the Tigers' defence. A quick break from Tigers then saw George Perrett, in the Wanderers' goal, race out to prevent a second goal. Late on in the first-half pressure from Wanderers resulted in Courtney Bray skillfully putting away a through ball to make it 1-1. Wanderers then came close to taking the lead with a fine curling corner from Jake Churchill.

In the second-half Wanderers brought on the lively Laurie Essenhigh for Jake Churchill. The game continued in the same fashion as the first-half with both teams having chances, but Tigers wrapped the game up in the dying minutes when Josh Hughes headed home from a corner.
