A playscheme that cares for, feeds and educates 20 disadvantaged children is under threat.

Lack of funding and the need for more youngsters means Playspace, which means at St Mary's Church hall, on Sherrards Green Road, Malvern, could be forced to close.

"There's just nowhere else for them to go," said concerned parent Sharon Rogers:

Playspace currently provides day and holiday care for children whose parents cannot afford the higher fees of other nurseries. It also runs training courses for parents, helping them to read and write and take more responsibility for the children.

Sarah Warren, who works for Playspace, said: "Unless we get more children coming to the sessions, or some more funding from somewhere, the centre will have to close."

Staff also encourage children to read and write and teach subjects including healthy eating and potty training.

Staff member Jean Griffin said: "When it all gets too much, the staff of Playspace are there to support in any way they can."

Playspace also provides care in the school holidays and takes the children away on a holiday each year.

"This gives the parents a well-earned rest, knowing that their children are in safe hands and to enable them to recharge their batteries," said Mrs Griffin.

Some employees are paid a nominal wage and the rest are volunteers, although the group would like to be able to pay all employees a reasonable wage.

Playspace is applying for funding from bodies such as the National Lottery but is also appealing to local businesses for help.
