Has anyone else noticed a bad result of a good initiative that is bothering me? The good is that there is less smoking inside public places but the bad is that there is an increase in litter outside from cigarette butts.
Now smokers are being driven outdoors they seem to think that they can drop cigarette butts anywhere. I suppose they used to put them in ash trays before and someone else emptied them. I walk around a lot and find this increased litter offensive: outside pubs, cinemas, theatres, libraries, post offices, offices, shops, hospitals, at bus stations and railway stations, and around seats in parks. Do these smokers expect someone else to come and clean up their mess or do they just not think?
We can't blame the young either. Last Saturday I watched a wedding party in Priory Park. What did all the smoking adults do with their cigarettes before being photographed? Dropped them on the path of course. I am glad that there is no, or less, smoking inside many public places now but who is responsible for the outsides? And don't get me started on the chewing gum.
