A WELL-travelled great grandmother has celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends in Alcester.

Alwen Long, nee Roberts, was joined by loved ones at Meadow View Care Home to mark her milestone birthday.

The centenarian was born in Corwen, North Wales, on June 17, 1906, before moving to Stratford 80 years ago where she met her husband-to-be, James.

Before tying the knot in November 1939, she travelled to 26 countries as a ladies' companion.

During the war years Mrs Long worked in the village shop in Welford-on-Avon.

She has one son, Peter, four grandchildren, Kerstine, Simon, Michael and Emily, and one great grandchild, Paige.

Manager of Meadow View Care Home Mel Young said: "It was a very memorable day and she had a lovely time.

Mrs Long says the secret for keeping so young is working hard, having a good marriage, a loving family and good friends.
