THE decision to relocate Redditch market back to Church Green is already proving popular with past and potential traders.

In April, existing stallholders were told the market would move back to its former home -- three years after being relocated to its current spot behind Debenhams. The move is set to happen next month.

The Redditch Council decision came after months of campaigning by disgruntled traders and shoppers who wanted the market moved back to Church Green.

Since the decision was made, the council has been inundated with calls from people considering either taking up a stall or, once again, renting a stall in Church Green.

Councillor Bill Hart-nett said: "The move of the market to Market Place in Church Green is great, not only for the traders but also for the public.

"It only came about via a change of heart by the county council in allowing the county-owned land to be used.

"We decided as a gesture of goodwill and recognition of their loyalty to grant a free week's rent for existing traders when they move.

"I was also very pleased to hear the phone has been ringing with new and former traders making enquiries about coming back to Redditch market. I wish the move well."

The council is to set aside £18,000 for carrying out works, promoting the move and for the launch weekend, including street entertainment.
