I REFER to my letter published in the Redditch Advertiser (June 14) in support of comments made by the Bishop of Worcester and Bishop for Prisons, the Rt Rev Dr Peter Selby, who had expressed concern about Brockhill Prison, which is to be re-roled as a men's prison.

The disgraceful conditions at the jail, highlighted in a previous report by HM Chief Inspector of Prisons, indicate the prison's unsuitability for prisoners of either sex.

This report, published on May 17, 2005, included comments by the Chief Inspector that the night sanitation system at Brockhill Prison was ''grossly inadequate, with women on occasions reduced to using plastic bags and rubbish bins''.

My letter of June 14 referred to a report in The Guardian (June 1, 2006): ''End 'degrading' slopping out, says prisons watchdog''.

In fact, this report referred to another women's prison -- Bullwood Hall, Essex -- also being re-roled as a men's prison.

My apologies for having referred to the wrong report in my previous letter.

But on the subject of apologies, surely the women who have been subjected to degrading treatment at Brockhill and Bullwood Hall prisons are owed an apology from the Prison Service.
