A ROW erupted at a parish council meeting over a controversial parking scheme.

At Stoke Parish Council, some members thought that the Bromsgrove District Council scheme was "disgusting".

From May 1, a £30 car parking permit fee is payable for disabled and the over 65s. The scheme was previously free. The charge also applies to over 60s who previously paid just £5.15.

Councillor Sean Shannon said these sections of the community should not be charged and he was opposed to the move.

Cllr Athol Deakin said if residents were complaining about the issue then something should be done as the parish council was there to serve the community.

Chairman Thelma Roll said at least ten people had complained to her about the scheme.

But some parish councillors thought that they should not get involved in the move because it was political. They thought councillors could write privately about the scheme, but not on behalf of the council.

But Cllr Jeanette Birmingham disagreed saying it had nothing to do with party politics.

"This move by the district council has caused great hardship on our residents. This is not a party political point and it certainly affects people from this area.

"It has not been decreed by government. This has been done without warning and the council should be challenged on it."

The parish council took a vote on the matter. Both councillors Shannon and Deakin, who are also serving district councillors, left the room and did not take part in it.

It was decided that the parish council write a letter to the district council challenging its action taken regarding parking fees and asking the local authority to justify the move or to think again.
