JUST a few months after taking up the sport, a group of Redditch pupils have been celebrating their success on the rugby league field.

A team of Year 9 students at St Augustine's High School took the honours in the Midlands round of the Powergen National Cup earlier in the summer and have now taken another scalp with victory over the North East champions in a match staged in Yorkshire.

And as part of their prize for reaching the latter stages of the competition, the youngsters were guests at Friday night's Super League clash between Bradford Bulls and St Helens.

Stuart Ross, head of PE at the Hunt End school, said: "This is a tremendous achievement as we have only recently started the sport.

"We have had a couple of coaches come to the school from Redditch Ravens and that helped us."

St Augustine's ran out 38-28 winners in Yorkshire with man of the match Chris Simmons running in three of his side's tries.
