SAMURAI Judo Club superstar Kate Walker has jetted off to Cuba for a 10-day international training camp with the British Olympic Development Sq-uad.

The 16-year-old Bewdley High School pupil has earned rave reviews from GB team coach Darren Warner, who praised her attitude and skills and insisted she has "real potential."

Cuba was chosen as a venue for the camp to replicate the heat and humidity they will face at the World Championships in the Dominican Republic later this year.

Coach and twice Olympic judo medallist Kate Howey said the squad would also benefit from receiving training and preparation tips from their Cuban hosts.

Meanwhile, Samurai and Bewdley judo clubs stole the show at their beginners tournament showcasing stars of the future.

There were golds for Samurai's Pippa Harper and Frankie Marston, while Bewdley's Arran Sullivan also struck gold.

Bewdley also bagged a bronze, while Samurai finished with a 13-medal haul.

Harper, 8, announced her arrival on the scene with gold in the lightest weight group after winning four contests with maximum point throws.

Chloe Meese did well to add a bronze despite being very light.

Marston was in outstanding form to win the second category and Samurai's second gold.

Another great prospect, Clare Hatherill, took bronze in the second and third girls categories.

Rosie Wilkes secured silver in the third group before Abbie Davies added another bronze in the fourth and final girls group.

The lightest boys group saw Bewdley's Rory Gulliver win the bronze with an excellent maximum point throw in the play-off.

His older brother Arran Gulliver grabbed gold in the next weight up after a final win over Samurai newcomer James Hatherill who had to settle for silver.

Kane Ward-Brennan also sealed the silver in the third boys group after losing in the final following three maximum points wins.

William Cook, whose grandfather Tom was a black belt with Kidderminster Judo Club many years ago, won bronze in the next weight group.

Joe Chase added a silver and Ed Coleman achieved two bronzes in the top two boys groups.
