ROB Warner and Lewis Skyers have been released by Worcester City.

The pair were told of their future by player-boss Andy Preece immediately after City's 3-0 Nationwide North victory at Worksop Town.

Despite covering for injured Danny McDonnell in City's last eight games -- and earning praise from Preece for his performances -- former academy goalkeeper Skyers is on his way.

Leigh RMI stopper James Coates, who appeared for Worcester last season, will return as McDonnell's permanent understudy.

Warner, 29, who joined City in the summer of 2004 and started every league game bar one this season, is also looking for a new club.

In what Preece described as 'probably his toughest decision' as City boss, he will lose Warner and seek a 'more attacking' right wing-back.

A replacement has not been found but Preece has made the position a summer transfer priority.

All other City players have been retained, although several, including Jai Stanley and Nick Colley, are mulling over new offers.

Preece admits Skyers and Warner were disappointed to learn of their fate, but acknowledged both players as 'magnificent servants' to the club.

"I spoke to everybody and obviously had one or two really tough decisions," said Preece.

"The one involving Rob was probably the toughest I've made at the club because he's played in every game bar one.

"Even now, I'm wondering if it's the right decision. But as manager, it's my job to make these decisions.

"The reasoning with Rob is that I feel we need a more attacking wing-back. If I had the money and the budget, I would have kept Rob here. But I've got to juggle about with the budget. As a more defensive wing-back, Rob has done a great job."

Preece added: "Some people might think letting Lewis go is also harsh. But if Danny McDonnell was out injured for a long spell next season, I feel we need someone there with more experience.

"Finance-wise, there will not be much between James and Lewis."
