I HAVE never heard such prolonged applause at The Rose, and although this was an excellent production throughout, much of the acclamation on Monday night was aimed directly at the three leads, who are brilliant.

Julie Innes is a superb Maggie, the bossiest of women, who can sell anyone a pair of boots, whether they want them or not, even if they cost as much as £1. When she decides she wants to marry Willie and make something of him, he has no option but to obey. James Stewart gives another outstanding performance as the timid Willie, who eventually finds some nerve, thanks to Maggie.

Think of any superlative and it will fit Stanley Barten's portrayal of Henry Hobson, who thinks his daughters should be obedient at all times, but they have other ideas.

Stanley manages to bring out all Hobson's emotions, his obstinacy, fear of scandal, and final resignation to let Maggie take charge.

It is well worth visiting The Rose this week. VJS
