STUART Watkiss blocked moves for two Kidderminster Harriers players after failing to land his own targets before yesterday's loan deadline.

The Harriers boss planned to capture a midfielder and a striker but the players, with one believed to be Rochdale's former Bristol Rovers forward Paul Tait, impressed for their clubs in mid-week outings.

Watkiss' efforts were scuppered as a result so he refused to allow two of his own key performers to join Football League clubs.

They would have taken them on loan with a view to a permanent transfer in January. Harriers will therefore field a similar side tomorrow in the Nationwide Conference at Burton Albion to the one that shocked Boston United with a 3-0 triumph in the LDV Vans Trophy on Wednesday.

Watkiss said: "One of our targets scored twice for his first team and the other came off the bench to set the winner up for his team.

"Because of that I've stopped anyone going from here as we don't have players to come in and replace them. We did have a couple of nominal bids for our players.

"If we had of let them go, we would have reduced the wage bill significantly. But I do know that somewhere along the line we will probably have to reduce it."

Impressive young midfielders Simon Heslop, Russ Penn and Marc Pugh are expected to keep their places at Burton.
