SIR - My father was a commercial traveller for Hill Evans and I thank Heaven he didn't live to see what has happened to the once grand Vinegar works building which was created at a time when civic pride and pride in the quality of what was produced in our city really mattered to local people.

Like the rest of Britain, Worcester is now simply up for sale to the highest bidder and the reason large parts of it are so seedy is that those who own these eyesores care nothing for Worcester except as a profitable investment. One has only to consider the trail of visual damage visited upon us by Great Universal Stores (Kays) to see the huge challenge good sons like Councillor Dave Clark face in pleading for a civilised approach to the development of areas like Lowesmoor.

JIM EVANS,

Worcester.
