During the present week, the King and Queen of Portugal have been visiting their relatives, the Duke and Duchess d'Orleans, at Woodnorton, near Evesham, and the people of the town and district have taken the greatest possible interest in the doings of their Majesties. The Great Western Railway station at Evesham was elaborately decorated on Saturday and despite the thick fog, a huge crowd collected near the approaches to the station, where a guard of honour of 100 Volunteers, the Mayor and Mayoress of Evesham (Alderman and Mrs Henry Smith) and the Corporation awaited the arrival of the Royal train.

A scheme which, so far as we are aware, has not been tried elsewhere, has been in operation at Eckington for some years, whereby some £30 or £40 has been raised towards the church improvement funds by the co-operation of fruit growers. The scheme is that those parishioners possessing gardens or orchards were invited to dedicate a tree to the Church and to give the proceeds arising each year from the sale of fruit on that tree towards the Church funds. Little metal tags bearing the words "Eckington Church Improvement" were attached to the tree.

Criticism of the inadequate accommodation at Prince Henry's Grammar School, Evesham, was expressed by the head master (Mr. C. E. Miller) at the annual speech day ceremony on Wednesday. Speaking of the school's close links with a very wide area of South Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and Warwickshire, he disclosed that over two-thirds of the school, more than 400 boys and girls, now came from well beyond the boundaries of Evesham. "I wish," he continued, "we could welcome them to a building worthy of themselves, of Evesham and of the school's responsibilities."

Informal negotiations have started with a view to the possible acquisition of premises in Evesham High Street for development as a new public library. The site has not been identified, but the extensive premises formerly occupied by Bailey's shop (and before that Averill's) have been vacant for a long time. Seven sites were reported to the Hereford and Worcester county council's amenities committee on Tuesday as possible places. These included Avonbridge House, Bridge Street, and a piece of land in Bewdley Street.
