It is difficult to know how magistrates can act when they have expert evidence before them, for if there be one professional witness on each side it is almost certain their evidence will be diametrically opposed. Such was the case at Evesham on Tuesday when a farmer was charged with causing a horse to be used when in an unfit state. For the prosecution a veterinary surgeon said the horse was so lame that it could not have been fit for work for some weeks before, and ought to have been shot. For the defence a fully qualified man who examined the horse said it walked and trotted around and was fit for "slow" work.

No matters of outstanding interest were discussed at the meeting of the Evesham Town Council held on Wednesday morning; but schemes to alleviate unemployment during the winter were urged. The minutes of the General Purposes Committee referred to repairs to the Town Hall and the Public Hall. With regard to the proposed improvements to Bengeworth Old Churchyard, the surveyor's estimate of the cost was £166. It was decided the matter could not proceed on these lines, and the Surveyor was asked to prepare a modified scheme, at a cost not exceeding £25.

Council house tenants in Evesham rural district who can afford to pay rents based on the actual cost of their homes may be required to do so from April 1 next year; and increased interest rates and the reduction in housing subsidies may also require the council to prune their housing programme. But, on the Finance Committee's recommendation, the council decided on Monday that a special sub-committee should investigate the whole question of council house rents.

Bengeworth Traders have guaranteed that it will be a bright Christmas in Port Street this year. A scheme to erect nine rows of coloured lights across the street has received full backing from members of the Bengeworth Traders' Association who have donated more than £1,000. This contrasts with the gloom and despondency of the Evesham Chamber of Commerce who are attempting a similar scheme in three streets in the town. They have so far collected less than £500. Mr Lawrence Jacobs, chairman of the traders social committee, said: "We have had a fantastic response. The appeal was only launched eight days ago and we were promised £1,000 in the first two days."
