MR Thomas Brown of Scarfield Wharf House, Alvechuch, lost 250 day-old chicks in a fire.

The nestling had been put up in a wooden structure inside a fowl house, which stood alongside the canal.

There were infra-red lamps to warm the chicks and it is thought that faults developed in the wiring.

The structure was burnt out but the pen was saved.
