SIR - Mike Foster's response to a letter by Peter Alcock raises questions that have started my alarm bells ringing. Why is Mr Foster so sensitive to criticism? Why did he go to such lengths to emphasise the support he has given, to our chief constable's opposition to the merger of his police force?

A simple statement saying the chief constable and the police authority were fully aware of his support would have been far more convincing.

Why did he even think, let alone suggest, that Peter Alcock should verify the support he has given to our chief constable.

I invite Mr Foster to silence my alarm bells by giving the Worcester News straightforward answers to the following questions.

Will he publicly oppose any undemocratic attempt by the Government to enforce the merger of our police forces by way of the Emergency Powers Act? On the other hand, how will he vote if the proposed merger is the subject of a free parliamentary vote?

I M JARVIS,

Worcester
