MISS Sweden, Eva Lena Lundgren, was in town to help judge the Miss Bromsgrove Carnival contest. The 19-year-old, who was in the Midlands for the Miss Europe finals, had hit international headlines after a West German newspaper claimed that she had once worked as a call girl. The panel of judges assembled at the Engine House in Tardebigge to select one of the 12 finalists as Miss Bromsgrove Carnival.

A FOETAL monitor, worth £3,000, was handed over to maternity staff at Bromsgrove General Hospital by representatives of the clubs which helped raise the money for it. Staff and patients joined in the fundraising efforts by arranging events including jumble sales and raffles. Donations came from the League of Friends, Catshill School, the Girl Guides and a number of anonymous donors.

BROMSGROVE Cricket Club had to settle for a draw in their match against Pershore. Pershore were bowled out for 116, with Geoff Parry taking seven wickets. In reply, Bromsgrove started confidently, racing to 49-1 after 10 overs, but a batting collapse forced Bromsgrove to bat out the game for a draw.

THE Bromsgrove area woke up to find itself awash, after torrential rain flooded roads, houses and fields. A huge mop-up operation was soon underway. In Stoke Prior, cars were abandoned near to the Hanbury Road's Navigation Bridge due to the depth of the water.
