A PROPOSAL to buy German-made typewriters for use in Bromsgrove Council House caused a rumpus. Conservative councillor, Edgar Longney, was one who objected, claiming an example should be set to buy British-made goods and also the fact they were £11 cheaper.

MAGISTRATES in Bromsgrove had dealt with 14 cases of drunkenness last year, but none involving drink driving, Superintendent Faulkner told the town's annual Brewster Sessions at the police court. The previous year four drivers had been charged. The district had a population of 40,400 which equated to one licensed premise to every 631 residents.

THE Clean Air Bill introduced in the Commons by neighbouring Kidderminster MP, Gerald Nabarro, to stop the big city smogs was condemned by Bromsgrove's MP Michael Higgs. He said he relished his open coal fire on a Sunday afternoon and questioned if the bill would lead to the formation of 'fire snoopers' reporting transgressors to the authorities.

WORSHIPPERS filled St Bartholomew's Church, at Tardebigge, for the Sunday morning service which was broadcast on BBC Radio. The vicar, the Rev Underhill, said later he had received many letters and phone calls from all over Britain from former residents who had tuned in and for whom the programme had brought back memories.

BROMSGROVE Urban District Council was being forced to prune back its spending plans. A scheme to purchase a greenhouse and cold frame to raise plants for the Council House garden and three other public plots was scrapped. The cost would have been £350.
