BROMSGROVE'S 40-year wait for an eastern relief road looked at last like coming to fruition. The county council this week accepted a tender for £2,781,737 from Wrekin Construction to build the road from Fringe Green to Townsend Mill.

A HEAVILY laden runaway lorry crashed into a four-bedroomed £50,000 detached house in Clydesdale Road, Droitwich Spa. The house, which fortunately was unoccupied at the time, later had to be partially demolished. It appeared the brakes had failed causing the vehicle to roll down a hill and into the house.

THE inaugural meeting of the newly-formed Bromsgrove Society saw the district council chamber full to overflowing with people keen to see the town's heritage preserved. The society also wanted the standard of architecture and planning in the district improved. John Foster was elected chairman and Alfred Wood vice chairman.

A CALL had gone out to find former girl guides in Bromsgrove who had been among the first to enrol in the movement when it had been founded 70 years ago.

She was to have played a leading role in Avoncroft Theatre Company's production of The Late Mr Larrington, but had fallen and broken a leg while out shopping. The play was called off.
