NEW Bromsgrove Rovers manager Rod Brown outlined his burning desire to get the club promoted from the Southern League Division One West.

During an intimate forum at the Victoria Ground the manager told the small number of fans who had braved the cold weather to make it that he is confident he can get Rovers promoted.

The Rovers boss, who lives in Bromsgrove, also spoke of how his first experiences of the club made him realise its potential.

Brown said: "I finished my playing career at Gloucester City and I played here a few times and it was obvious this is a football town.

" I even came here for two weeks in pre-season when Bobby Hope was just starting to take Rovers up the leagues.

"There were the likes of Richardson and O'Meara there and a very good side was just taking shape.

"Bobby turned it into a massive club. Being part of it, if only for a short time, makes you want to come back.

"This is a club that need success, the pressure here is massive. It's the same as Worcester City. They're big clubs and the expectations are very high."

Brown believes that he is adding some much-needed steel to the team in a bid to boost its promotion chances this season.

He said: "I'm a 150 per-cent winner. I don't like negative Normans and players who are big-time Billies. If you have those sort of players you won't win a thing.

"I will get it right on the pitch. To win this league you have to build a side with physical presence. you can play football all day, but if you can't stand up you won't win anything.

"I want to build a side that will go up. We can't always play nice football but we will still get results.

"We have conceded five goals since I joined, three in the first two games. But we have tightened up since then.

" I would rather win ten games 1-0, I know that's boring but every game is different."

Brown revealed he had spent £750 of his own money to buy the players' identical training tops in a bid to foster team spirit.

The former Redditch United boss has also brought in a new fine system.

Players' fines are collected in a kitty and used for an end of season trip.

He said: "I'm a fanatical disciplinarian. I don't suffer fools gladly. If they want to win things at this club, players will have to follow the rules.

"In three and a half weeks we have made remarkable strides. There is a winning mentality in the changing rooms."

Brown also defended under-siege chairman Tom Herbert. Rovers' supporters blame Herbert for the departure of the previous manager Jimmy Mullen.

However, Brown claimed Pat Cremin, chairman of previous club Redditch United was difficult to work with.

He said: "I don't want to get involved in the politics at this club, I'm a football manager.

"I know the chairman here gets a lot of criticism.

"But the chairman at my last club was the worst I have ever worked with

"I had to work in a situation where players weren't being paid and worse."

"The chairman says he's been here five years and hasn't done anything.

"But I believe we can go up this season in the play-offs."

Herbert responded to the critics by asking why they didn't turn up to the forum.

He said: "Where were all those who criticise me on the net? This was a chance to ask the manager and myself anything they wanted, but they didn't turn up."
