A FORMER Pershore High School pupil with aspirations of playing football in the Premiership has been suspended from the game for six months after testing positive for cocaine.

Chris Cornes, aged 19, who signed professional forms with Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club in early 2005, failed a random drugs test conducted by the FA - Football Association - in February.

The issue was discussed at a board meeting of the club on Tuesday where it was decided that Cornes would be allowed to stay at the club but warned that another breach of discipline would be his last.

Wolverhampton Wanderers chief executive Jez Moxey said: "We were extremely disappointed to hear that one of our players has tested positive for a banned substance.

"Chris was the subject of some debate at the board meeting and the club's stance on any drug-related issue is clear, we condemn any use of banned substances.

"Having spoken to Chris, it has been decided his contract will not be terminated.

"However, we have made it clear to him he could be dismissed if he is unable to demonstrate to the club and its supporters, that he is a model professional.

"He is grateful for the club supporting him and regrets the embarrassment caused to the club."

Cornes denied knowingly taking drugs at an FA interview, but is banned by the 'strict liability' rules governing all footballers.

He enjoyed a successful loan spell at Port Vale last season and returned to Wolves for pre-season training this year in the hope of making his first team debut.

His ban has been backdated and will end in October.
