TIME capsules were buried and fancy dress donned to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Abbey Park First School in Pershore.

Staff and pupils at the school took part in various activities during the week including an open day with a trip down memory lane for visitors thanks to a display of old photographs depicting the old town of Pershore and the old school building.

Visitors including parents and grandparents were invited on the day to see the display, look around the rest of the school to see the modern methods of teaching and technology used in school nowadays, and see the quad area with a stone from the original school building of 1906.

Pupils and staff got into the spirit of things by dressing up in different eras from the last 100 years and there was a competition with prizes donated by friends of the school.

Time capsules were buried in the quad area with everyone having a say on what items would be included. The decision was made that a copy of the Evesham Journal, a class register and a piece of writing as it is now, as it will probably have changed significantly over the next 100 years, should be placed inside.

The plan will be to open the capsules in 50 year's time with the hope that many of the children will be around to see it happen.

To round off the fun, a street party with special guest Nuts the squirrel, the school's mascot, was held, followed by a summer fair opened by Evesham Mayor Cllr Jo Sandalls. A balloon launch marked the end of the celebrations.

Jane Hodgson, administrator at the school, said: "A mention must go to all our sponsors, including more than 30 local businesses that have donated money to support the street fair, entertainments and summer fair. All of the money raised will go towards improving outside areas around the school, including an environmental area."
