THE stage is set for a royal visit to Pershore when the Duke of Edinburgh will be in town to officially open Number 8 Community Arts Centre.

During his visit on Monday, Prince Philip will be touring the facilities and meeting some of the people who have given so much for the benefit of Pershore and district.

Number 8 is truly a unique venue. Ten years ago a lobbying group was formed with the aim of providing an arts venue for Pershore. The lobbying group turned into an action group and after taking over the former Co-op building at 8 High Street the group opened a charity shop to help fundraising for the redevelopment of the site.

The charity shop raised over £600,000, nearly half the amount required, with trusts foundations and grants contributing towards the remaining amount.

Alongside the charity shop were two converted spaces which local community groups and organisations began to use for art classes, a ballet school and keep fit. Now it is flourishing with a diverse programme of films, live events, creative courses and children's arts activities, with over 250 volunteers working to ensure its success. The building has not only contributed to the improved High Street vista but provides a valuable service for the community, whether as participant, audience or volunteer.

Ray Steadman, managing director, said: "Monday will be a day of celebration for all those who have contributed to the incredible achievement that is Number 8 Community Arts Centre, a venue that is truly inspired and led by the people of Pershore."

Chairman Jane Daniels said although the royal visit marked a significant landmark in the history of Number 8, it was by no means the end of the story.

"We are constantly;y evolving,"she said. "We have appointed an operations manager to allow the volunteer managers to spend more time on other essential tasks, such as marketing and publicity."

More space will be provided next summer when the Georgian roof will be rebuilt and the first and second floors reinstated to include a new open plan office for the management team.
