YOUNGSTERS in Broadway will soon be broadening their horizons as plans to create an internet cafe at the village youth club gained momentum this week.

The scheme was given a massive boost on Tuesday when members of Wychavon District Council's executive board voted to approve a grant of £10,000 towards the cost of the project following a recommendation from the community grants group.

The cash will also be used towards the cost of enhancing the club's headquarters and neighbouring skate park in Leamington Road in the village.

Broadway youth leader Betty Phillips who has been campaigning to obtain funding for the skate park was delighted.

"It is absolutely wonderful, it really is," she said. " We - youth leaders and children - have waited a long time for more funding to repair our skate park which was only open for six weeks when it was first built two years ago."

Broadway youngsters have been unable to use the skate park has it does not meet to safety standards after the flooring became raised shortly after being laid down.

Mrs Phillips added: "The money will really be appreciated by everyone and will make a huge difference to the teenagers as they were starting to lose heart with not having a park which they can enjoy."

The money will also go towards funding an internet cafe and new equipment which will provide young people with modern facilities.

The grant was one of a number approved by the board this week. Other beneficiaries include the Harvington Youth Project which was awarded a grant of £950 which was required because the project has been so successful, and Evesham Arts Society which will receive £1,000 towards the cost of a new projector and associated equipment.
