STAFF and teachers at an Abberley school had a double reason to celebrate after receiving a glowing Ofsted report and recognition for their eco-friendly approach.

Inspectors from the independent education watchdog praised Abberley Parochial VC Primary School for its excellent quality of teamwork and outstanding quality of care and support.

They described the teaching as "exciting", leaving pupils with the ability to effectively work both in groups and individually. The report went on to state how the school offered an inclusive and innovative curriculum, which "meets pupils' personal needs extremely well".

Lead inspector, Christine Ann Field, said: "Pupils receive a rounded education, achieve well academically and build high levels of confidence because of the school's very strong emphasis on them 'learning by doing'.

"Everyone at Abberley places the pupils' total well being at the centre of their work and, as a result, individuals feel safe and secure and able to take full advantages of the exciting experiences on offer."

She added: "An excellent partnership is in place with other local schools that both adds enrichment to the curriculum and supports improvement. The school has a very good capacity to continue to improve."

The quality of teachers' planning was also praised, although it was noted there was extra scope for "sharper assessment" of the progress made by the more able learners.

Pupils and staff were also pleased to discover, in the same month, they had won the prestigious green flag award.

That is given to schools which show a commitment to continuously tackling environmental issues and examining ways they can reduce their impact on their communities.

The international scheme is run by the Foundation for Environmental Education and the school's scheme, which includes the Eco Club, was scrutinised by its inspectors before being awarded the prestigious flag.

Headteacher, Jenny Taylor, said: "Our aim at Abberley is to have a happy school where pupils succeed because we care about their future.

"We're delighted that our children have the opportunity to explore and understand green issues and put their ideas into practice. I think that's why our Ofsted inspector enjoyed her visit so much - the children were bubbling over with things to tell her about what they were doing."
