SCORES of colourful banners are set to brighten up Worcester Cathedral as part of a arts project being carried out by disadvantaged youngsters from across Worcestershire.

This summer, Salisbury-based community arts company, Toozalii will be working with the youngsters to make the installation of more than 150 banners.

The giant piece of art will be displayed as an installation in the grounds of Worcester Cathedral throughout the period of the Worcester Festival, which is running from Saturday, August 12 to Saturday, August 26.

It is designed to encourage people to wander through and experience the light, sounds, movement and the colour of creativity.

This project gives young people, who would not normally have an opportunity to take part in such a high profile project, a chance to get involved.

Workshops will run from Tuesday, June 20 to Thursday, July 27, involving youngsters from schools and youth groups including the RNIB College in Whittington Road, Thornton House Special School in Worcester's Wyld's Lane, Upton Youth Crew, Malvern Say It Yourself Group and The King's School Worcester.

It will be officially launched with an evening of music and dance starting at 6.30pm on Saturday, August 12 in the grounds of the Cathedral, with the youngsters invited as special guests.

Alex Grant of Toozalii was awarded the National Arts Council England Fellowship for 2006 for his community arts works across Britain. He said: "It's fabulous to see the excitement and the enjoyment that being a part of such a large public project can bring."

After the installation comes down, it is set to go on tour and expand to other cathedral locations over future years including in Cornwall, Carlisle and Durham.

The majority of project funding has been raised by the Wiltshire arts charity, Circular Arts.
