PLAYERS of a different kind will be aiming for their own world cup glory in Worcester this month as the city hosts the regional heat of an international DJ competition.

While England's footballers will be striving to be crowned champions in Germany, the nation's top DJs are preparing to mix it up this summer in the Movida Corona competition.

The event is now in its fifth year and aims to showcase the best up-and-coming club and bedroom DJs and acts as a recognised launch-pad onto the international stage.

More than 500 mixing masters from the across the UK battled it out in last year's competition - and organisers are expecting even more this year.

Ten DJs will be getting behind the wheels of steel at Sin Bar in Worcester's New Street on Tuesday, July 18, as a regional heat takes place.

In the run-up to the big date, the venue is also hosting DJ nights for local disc-spinners to try their hand every Tuesday, starting this week.

Mixing masterminds will show off their talent on the turntables at the event - which runs from 7.30pm to midnight - and the winner will then go on to a regional final.

That leads on to the Movida Corona UK final - at London's Ministry of Sound, and the chance for the ultimate prize of a place in the world championship, where competitors will be battling it out against winners from more than 70 countries.

Paul Todd, a partner in Sin Bar, said: "There's a lot of top DJs taking part and this is a massive thing for Worcester to get hold of.

"The city has got some very good DJs and hopefully one of them can go forward to the UK final and hopefully even the world final." Between now and the end of the summer, clubbers will be able to witness top spin doctors weaving their mixing magic during 22 heats in towns and cities across the UK.

Last year's world final took place in Morocco, with the winner scooping a 4x4 Suzuki Jimny, hundreds of pounds of Korg music equipment and various Corona Extra goodies.
