AN INQUEST has been opened into the death the former mayor of Upton-upon-Severn.
Paul Thomas’ body was found hanging by a dog walker at the riverside in Dunn’s Lane at 6.10am on Sunday.
The 55-year-old, of London Lane, Upton-upon-Severn, stepped down as mayor in February after he was arrested on suspicion of committing a voyeuristic act.
He had been due to answer bail at Worcester police station next month.
Mr Thomas cited personal reasons for his resignation as mayor and town councillor of Upton.
Simon Yates, who replaced him as town mayor, said: “It is sad really that it has come to this.
“As a mayor he was always very conscientious and put Upton first.”
The inquest was opened by Worcestershire Coroner Geraint Williams at Stourport-on-Severn Coroner’s Court yesterday and adjourned while further reports are carried out.
Police are treating his death as unexplained but it is not believed to be suspicious.
