THOUSANDS of teenagers are being invited to a free road show promoting apprenticeships in Worcestershire on Thursday. The Real Apprentice showcase is being held at Worcester Rugby Club from 3.30-8pm. It is part of a region-wide tour covering Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Birmingham, the Black Country, Shropshire and Staffordshire.

The aim of the free showcases is to encourage young people to get employment with training through an apprenticeship. Students in years 10, 11 and 12 and their parents or guardians have been invited to go along a The Real Apprentice showcase and find out what’s on offer in Worcestershire. The events are organised by BCTG (Black Country Training Group) based in the West Midlands on behalf of the National Apprenticeship Service. Across the region there are thousands of opportunities, in more than 150 different occupations, funded by the National Apprenticeship Service.

West Midlands regional director for the National Apprenticeship Service, Stephen Lilley explained: “Apprenticeships are different today. Before it was predominantly the traditional ‘trades’ such as construction and engineering. Now we have apprenticeships in literally thousands of different occupations. The other big change is in their structure which combines on-the-job training with broader occupational skills and knowledge. This results in a much more rounded employee with qualifications that are recognised and transferable.

“For young people, learning while doing and earning a wage is an attractive opportunity. Research shows interesting results. If you qualify with a Level 3 apprenticeship you will earn £105,000 more over your career. With a Level 2 apprenticeship its £70,000 more over your career.”

Chris Luty, BCTG director, said:“We have expert apprenticeship training providers at each event with advice and information on the very many options open to young people. It really is the best opportunity for them and their parents to come along and talk face to face to someone about the excellent Apprenticeship career opportunities open to them.”
