MORE than 200 people crowded into the Memorial Hall in Upton to get the latest look at proposals for permanent flood defences in the town.

The Environment Agency held an exhibition of its plans for the New Street and Waterfront areas.

This gave residents and traders a chance to see up-to-date proposals for an earth bund along the playing fields and a permanent flood wall along the waterfront.

The waterfront defences have been the subject of some contention in Upton, and the latest plans have taken previous feedback into consideration, with features such as glass panels and raised ground sections now incorporated into plans.

Among some 230 people who attended were Tom and Pam Foort, of the Upton Flood Forum, a group in support of permanent flood defences.

“I think it was a better presentation than previous ones and gave people a much better idea of how things will be,” said Mr Foort. “I think as far as the waterfront is concerned this is something that should happen.

“They cannot guarantee the temporary barriers forever and we need something resilient that does not need a lot of manpower.”

Mrs Foort said: “I think they have really worked hard to try and take notice of the people on the riverfront.”

Upton resident Rosemary Webb said: “I have always thought it is a good idea. I honestly think the waterside scheme will enhance the town and give it a new lease of life.”

Mary Dhonau, chief executive of the National Flood Forum, said: “Flood defences are absolutely essential for Upton. Any more flooding like 2007 will absolutely kill the town.”

Area flood risk manager Anthony Perry was pleased with the event.

“There was a lot of support for the proposals, but we do respect that some individuals are concerned about the scheme,” he said. “Following the exhibition there are some amendments that will improve the scheme, which we will make as a result of listening to people.

“We will start work on those amendments and share the changes with the town council, who are representatives of the community.”

It is hoped that a planning application for the scheme will be submitted next month.
