ONE county school has done its best to help those with hearing problems.

Pupils at Prince Henry’s High School in Evesham held a sponsored Deaf Day and raised £300 for the Worcester Deaf Children’s Society.

Sixth form students at the school wore moulded earplugs for a day and attended lessons as usual in order to better understand the difficulties facing deaf and hard of hearing students in mainstream schools. The ear plugs created mild deafness and students found that this made classes much more difficult and tiring.

A school spokesman said: “Anything that makes us more thoughtful and considerate about how other people experience the world has got to be a good thing.”

The day was followed by a ‘hands-on’ assembly for the whole of the sixth form to increase their knowledge of deaf awareness.

Worcester Deaf Children’s Society intends to use the money to fund activities for deaf children and young people in Worcestershire throughout this year.

Already planned are horse riding and a day of activities at Malvern Outdoor centre, as well as the annual fireworks and Christmas party.

The activities are open not only to deaf children but also their family and aim to improve confidence while giving families a chance to relax and have some fun together.

Elaine Wilkins, chairman of the committee for Worcester Deaf Children’s Society, said: “We are extremely grateful to Prince Henry’s for raising this money and, in particular to Nairi, for organising the day. We are a small family-based charity which relies heavily on fundraising and donations to support our activities.”

Worcester Deaf Children’s Society meets on the first Saturday of every month and any families with a deaf child wishing to come along are welcome.

The next meeting will be on Saturday at Perdiswell Young People’s Centre when there will be a “paint a pot”

activity and a bouncy castle.
