WORCESTER residents’ enthusiastic response to our clean-up campaign has delighted the council.

Mike Harrison, head of cleaner and greener at Worcester City Council, is thrilled with the number of people who have called to report their top grot spots.

In total, 65 have been reported of which 50 have been dealt with, five are on private land, six need further action and four are waiting for action to be confirmed.

Nominating your worst grot spots is one part of the Take Pride in Worcester campaign, which is being run by your Worcester News alongside the city council and VisitWorcester.

Mr Harrison said: “The idea behind this campaign was to increase the public’s satisfaction with the cleanliness of Worcester. When we meet people some say this is a messy city. This was about tackling that.

“We need the public to tell us if there is an area which needs to be cleaned. We pick up on problem spots ourselves, but we can’t know about every single one. If we get reports, we can deal with them.

“The grot spots we’re left with now are not actually grot spots as such, but are a bit more tricky. Because the public have been so positive with us we are trying to be positive back and go that extra mile.

“That means talking to private land owners about their front gardens and similar.”

Mr Harrison said most of the grot spots reported have been isolated incidents of either dog fouling or areas which have a litter problem, which have only needed an hour of the cleansing teams’ time to clean properly.

“We are delighted there has not been one which has been thrown up as a major problem area,” he said. “The whole campaign is going brilliantly. It has been really positive and the support we’ve had from both the public and the Worcester News has been great.”
