THE race is on to become the new leader of Worcestershire County Council.
We reported that Dr George Lord resigned on Saturday over allegations of inappropriate sexual behaviour towards female members of staff.
While Dr Lord was unavailable for comment again yesterday, it is understood he has denied the allegations.
His departure has left his deputy Councillor Adrian Hardman in charge.
He would not be drawn on whether he has thrown his hat into the ring and said that rules said no one should announce their intentions in case it changed a colleague’s mind about whether to stand.
However, your Worcester News understands that Conservative Coun Hardman, who is currently cabinet member for finance and represents Bredon ward, is likely to get a clear run for the top job.
One of the favourites for the deputy post is Councillor Simon Geraghty, who currently holds the portfolio for planning, economy and performance on the cabinet.
If he got the job, he would still be able to hold on to his position as leader of Worcester City Council – providing he felt that he could dedicate enough time and effort to both jobs.
Nominations close today and the Conservative group will then hold a meeting on Monday, when a new leader and deputy leader will emerge.
They will have to be formally appointed at a council meeting on Thursday, November 18.
