PEOPLE in Worcester are being warned to be on their guard following reports of an e-mail scam.

The warning, from Worcestershire Regulatory Services team, comes as a chain e-mail about an alleged postal scam is being circulated on the internet. Chain e-mails are being sent out referring to the Royal Mail, Trading Standards and ICSTIS (the former name of PhonePayPlus).

The e-mail gives details about a telephone service (operating on 0906 6611911) that was shut down in 2005 by PhonePayPlus – the phone-paid services regulator – and is no longer running. The company Studio Telecom, based in Belize, was subsequently fined £10,000.

Anyone who receives an e-mail warning them about the alleged scam is being advised not to forward it to others.

People are advised to forward the official statement available at phonepayplus.org.uk
