THE fight to prevent the deaths of babies received a boost from the city’s publicans and licensees.

Worcester and District Licensed Victuallers’ Association donated £400 to UK Sands – the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death charity.

The money will be used for research and the support of bereaved families.

Linda Griffin, LVA chairman, said the money was raised at a members’ dinner in memory of former chairman Mike Stevens, who died last year.

“Part of the money raised has gone to Sands, a cause that Mike supported during his time as chairman,” she said.

“We’re happy to pass over this money in memory of his work and support for them.

"He would buy them Christmas trees and lend a hand when he could – it was a cause he was very passionate about.”

Coun Mike Layland, Worcester mayor, formally handed over the cash at the city’s Guildhall.

He said the LVA had “come up trumps”.
