TOMORROW'S bin collections in Worcester are in doubt but residents are being asked to put their rubbish out.

With more snow falling across the city this afternoon and the forecast showing no signs of letting up, bosses at Worcester City Council are warning residents their black bins might not be emptied on Tuesday.

All refuse collections were on schedule up to and including Friday, December 17.

There are no domestic collections today but trade waste collections are being affected by the low temperatures.

The oil is frozen in the hydraulic bin lifters preventing bins being emptied into lorries and any waste collected being compacted.

Mike Harrison, head of cleaner and greener, said: ”As a result of these problems, and given the forecast for the next 24 hours, it is very unlikely that Tuesday’s black bin collections will go ahead.

"However we ask all residents to put out their black bins or bags as normal tomorrow and leave them out.

"Every attempt will be made to collect them before the end of the week.

"We hope the weather will improve sufficiently for the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday collections to take place as normal.

"Tuesday’s bins will be collected with these."

City council teams were out over the weekend gritting and removing snow from the city centre and the crematorium but, as is the case throughout the country, very low temperatures have reduced the effectiveness of the salt spread.

The city council says the salt will act on the snow when the temperature rises.

The council said it will continue to concentrate on the main shopping area of the city centre to make it as safe as possible for shoppers.

Meanwhile, tonight's rescheduled scrutiny committee meeting at the Guildhall has been cancelled while tomorrow's cabinet meeting has been brought forward from 7pm to 4pm due to concerns about peoples' safety travelling home in the evening when temperatures look set to plummet.
