WITH a further snow warning in the region, motorists across Worcestershire are being warned to brace themselves for more hazardous conditions.

Weather forecasts have predicted sub-zero temperatures and icy roads, and with further snow showers forecast for the West Mercia region later today (Tuesday) and into Wednesday, roads that have been previously cleared may again become difficult to use.

The Safer Roads Partnership is urging motorists to assess their local weather conditions and check the updated advice from agencies such as the Highways Agency, local news stations and the Met Office.

Vicki Bristow, communications manager for the Safer Roads Partnership said if people are travelling over the festive period, it would be advisable to tell someone your destination, what route you plan to take and to make sure your mobile is fully charged.

She said: “Driving in these quickly changing conditions can be particularly challenging for drivers as vehicle handling changes and stopping times and distances greatly increase on icy, wet roads.

"It is important to drive smoothly and avoid braking sharply or accelerating quickly as this could lead to wheels locking or spinning.

"The advice from the Safer Roads Partnership is to keep well back from the vehicle in front to allow plenty of time to slow down and always look as far ahead as possible to anticipate what other road users might be planning to do.”

She added: “Conditions vary across the three counties and with more snow forecast the situation can change very quickly so we advise people to check local advice before deciding whether or not to travel.

"Before setting off on a journey we are urging motorists to clear all snow and ice off windows, mirrors, lights and roof and even if you think your journey is only a short one take a few moments to pack an ‘emergency kit’ in the car in case of break down or delay.

"The kit should include items such as an ice-scraper, torch, warm clothes and a blanket, a pair of boots, a first aid kit, battery jump leads, a shovel for snow, food and drink and sunglasses to help see in low winter sun.”
