THE relaying of a Worcester footpath has been labelled a “colosall” waste of money by a resident.

Workmen arrived in Kenwood Avenue, off Tolladine Road, earlier this week and began digging up and replacing one of the footpaths.

But local man Douglas Robinson has been left confused as he believes this is exactly the same stretch of path which was replaced three years ago – and, according to him, there was absolutely nothing wrong with it.

“That footpath was only put down quite recently,” he said.

“As a far as I can see they have got the wrong piece of footpath. The footpath they should be taking up is further along the road.

“There is nothing wrong with the footpath.”

Mr Robinson, aged 78, got on the phone to the Worcestershire Hub straight away and was told the footpath was 20 years old.

He said: “I would guess it’s actually been replaced within the last three years. What a colossal waste of time and money to do it again.

“When there are funds available they use them up. I can walk down into the middle of Worcester and find far worse pavements.”

A spokesman for Worcestershire County Council said there was no evidence the footway had been replaced in the last two years and an on-site inspection found the path had “a number of defects”.

The spokesman said: “The whole of the footway is being reconstructed to reduce costs associated with doing the work in stages and to bring the whole of the current surface to same standard. This will wear at the same rate, extending the lifespan to approximately 20 years.”

The work is part of a £3 million countywide footway enhancement scheme.
