UPTON-upon-Severn will be celebrating the royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton in style.

Members of the town’s tourism and trade association are planning to organise a town party to mark the big day, on Friday, April 29.

The day has been designated an official public holiday, and chairman of the association Peter Webb believes it is an occasion people will want to celebrate.

He said: “Our association will take the lead in organising the celebrations and we will be looking to have things such as window displays, bunting and entertainment for the children.

“We will be formulating the exact plan at our meeting next week but I can say for sure that we will be looking to make a good party out of it.

“I think it is something that people will want to celebrate and also something that could be good for the town in terms of attracting people to visit.”

Mr Webb is also a member of Upton Town Council and he has asked members of its open spaces committee to consider buying and putting up bunting for the celebration. The request will be discussed at the next full council meeting on Tuesday, February 22.

Upton’s mayor Andrea Morgan said: “I think it will be good for the town. There should be a lot of people around anyway as it is the folk festival that weekend and it will be something that people want to celebrate.

“It will also be nice for the children in Upton-upon-Severn as well as it will give them something to remember the occasion.”

Prince William and Miss Middleton will wed at Westminster Abbey.
