ILLUMINATED signs telling people to slow down should be introduced in a Worcester road, according to a local councillor.
Coun Mike Layland has challenged authorities to do something about racing cars in Canterbury Road, Ronkswood, following the removal of a speed hump.
As the Worcester News reported on Friday, the hump was removed after Kim Weston said it caused her home to flood.
She said her home had twice been flooded because the hump, which was designed to stop cars driving any faster than 20mph, would collect water and divert it towards her property.
But now it has been removed there is nothing to stop drivers breaking the limit. Coun Layland said: "The hump was put up because there is a real problem in the area, but I don't think it served its purpose from the start. The very first day it was put up I remember a car speeding up to it and flying over the top. In a nutshell, this does not stop the idiots we are targeting - these humps do not stop the boyracers, or anyone else who speeds.
"I don't think speed cameras are the answer either, because all they seem to do is criminalise people that are otherwise law abiding.
"These lit-up panels that advise people to slow down are excellent, so why don't we have one of them?
"It would play on the conscience of drivers and encourage them to drive slower.
"I've been past them, and they really do work. There is a lot of sense in the idea."
Traffic calming measures are the responsibility of the Highways Partnership Unit, which is part of the county council.
A spokesman for Worcestershire County Council said: "We are confident the integrity and safety of the area won't be compromised by the removal of the speed hump, but we will, of course, be keeping a close eye on it.
"Though we recognise the hump has gone we are keen for the 20mph limit to be maintained."
