DOG mess is blighting a Worcester beauty spot because of a lack of bins, a walker claims.

Chris Dennis said he often has to dodge “copious amounts of mess” when walking along the new Diglis Bridge and surrounding footpaths with his Jack Russell dog, Honey, and 18-month-old son Isaac.

The 28-year-old, of Worcester, believes owners would be more motivated to pick up after their pets if dog bins were provided in the area as there are none between the bridge and the city centre on the west side of the river.

But after contacting Worcester City Council, Mr Dennis was told it had “reached its capacity” of dog bins and could not afford to regularly empty new ones.

“There are no dog bins there whatsoever along the whole route,” said the civil servant.

“I’m asking for one or two bins along the walkway. I’ve got a small child and I walk him up and down there because it’s a nice walk.

“I pick up my dog’s mess but it’s a good half a mile before I can put it in a bin. “The council has invested all this money in the bridge and made it really nice but this is the one thing that’s letting it down.

“You have to dodge copious amounts of mess and there are bags hanging from hedges and fences where people have just chucked them. It’s not good for the environment either.

“My son is two in September and he’s in that stage where he wants to get out and walk around but I don’t want to let him out.

“There are dog bins in the field but nowhere near the path that has been created.

“The frustrating thing is that no one’s doing anything about it. I’ve often spoken to people walking down there about the bins and they’ve said the same thing.”

A spokeswoman for the city council said there were no immediate plans to put dog bins along the bridge and path.

She said the area was cleaned daily.

“We haven’t had a problem with that area over the past 12 months,” she said.
