SIXTIES pop star PJ Proby, who is charged with falsely claiming more than £47,000 in benefits, will stand trial at Worcester Crown Court.
The 72-year-old, of Twyford, near Evesham, appeared before magistrates yesterday for a committal hearing after pleading not guilty to benefit fraud.
Proby, whose real name is James Smith, simply answered “yes” to confirm his name, address and the charges against him.
The pensioner faces a total of nine charges relating to claims for pension credit, housing benefit and council tax benefit.
Among charges against the star are two counts of failing to declare income from savings and investments, and four of failing to notify the authorities of a change in circumstances.
Proby is alleged to have committed the offences between November 2002 and March 2008.
He was granted bail to appear before a judge at crown court on Tuesday, April 26.
