A ROBBER who stole from a vulnerable man with dementia – then left him beaten and bloodied in his own home – has been jailed for six years.

Dylan Morgan deliberately targeted 64-year-old Roy Pedder before stealing £100 cash and cigarettes.

Worcester Crown Court was told that Mr Pedder, who is suffering from the early stages of dementia, was punched in the mouth and fell to the floor before being held down with a foot to his face.

Morgan, aged 28, of Deacle Place, Evesham, pleaded guilty to robbery following the incident on Thursday, February 17.

Peter Grice, prosecuting, said Morgan and another man entered Mr Pedder’s home in Evesham.

He said: “The two men entered his home, he was pushed to the floor, £100 was taken and he was then further assaulted by being punched in the mouth and a foot was placed on his face.

“He lives on his own and is a vulnerable man.”

Morgan was identified as one of the culprits as Mr Pedder knew him. No one else has been successfully prosecuted for the offence.

The court was told that Morgan had a lengthy record and had served time in custody for shoplifting and theft matters. He was on bail for shoplifting when the robbery took place.

Michael Aspinall, defending, said his client had battled with a long-term heroin addiction but on the day of the offence he had turned to alcohol as a substitute.

Judge Alistair McCreath said the case had a number of aggravating features.

Passing sentence, he said: “This is a robbery of a man who because of his condition is effectively an elderly person. He is in his own home and is vulnerable.

“Roy Pedder was known to you. He was in fact a man of 64 but old beyond his years with the onset of Alzheimer’s, you must have known he was someway inflicted.

“You invaded his home and robbed him.

“There can be only one commonsense conclusion and that is that you deliberately targeted him.

"You recognise this is a very serious offence indeed.”

Speaking outside court, a family spokesman said: “We are pleased with the sentence. Uncle Roy will be absolutely delighted that justice has been done.”
